How a Failure to Take the Internet Seriously not only Affects Sales but your Reputation!

He runs a very successful leasing company and was following up on a file he had given one of his top people to handle. He asked her if she approved them for the equipment they needed to lease. Much to his surprise she told him “no, they seemed way to shady I searched the company on google and all I found was an address. No website or anything. What type of business dosn’t have a website?”

The employee had based her decision to approve this businesses application for funding simply on the fact that due to the lack of information she could find on them. She is under the impression that any reputable business would have a strong presence on the internet and information would be readily available.

My uncle was taken back, for the company in question had been in operation since 1963 and he knew that they had an excellent reputation. But this company was an old mortar type business and had done nothing to stay current with the modern world. So now my uncle was in a situation were his employee had denied a financing deal with a terrific potential client and this business couldn’t buy new equipment to operate. All because they had never considered their online presence. After inquiring further he found out that they were not the only ones to deny this company and that they had turned to my uncles company as a last resort. My uncle did reverse the situation but that was only because he knew the business personally.

The point of this story is that in today’s world people use the internet to form their opinions and to make decisions. Not having an online strategy is hurting you in more ways than you can imagine.

Failure is part of the business cycle- The most important!

Failing in business is the key to success. Its contrary to everything that all the books tell you. They tell you to avoid failure at all costs and to plan, plan, plan. Just keep a positive attitude and work hard and everything will be all right. What they fail to mention is that all successful people are really just masters at dealing with failure. Successful business people fail at most things they do. The most successful sales person in the office is the guy who was told no the most. The company that came up with the best solution had the most ideas that were wrong. Most people fail or avoid business not because they can’t do it, instead they are simply afraid of failure. Positive thinking is irrelevant to most successful people its more of a nature. In order to become a master at anything scientist will tell you that the 10,000 hour rule is what works. You need 10,000 hours of practice to master and skill and this is true of business. The point here is that what do you think happens over those 10,000 hours of practice, well the answer is that you fail, a lot. To see failure for what it truly is “a lesson” is what separates winners from losers. So the next time you embark on a new task please keep in mind that you will fail and that this is a good thing. So long as you embrace your failures and see them for what they are you will be fine. Great salespeople know that they will hear the word “no” and they embrace it and move on, becoming stronger and better all the time. When people try to avoid failures and mistakes they narrow their vision and use statements like “this has to work”. Really, how does anyone know, especially when dealing with the public. The point I am trying to make is that when you start something go into it knowing that failure will dominate whatever you are doing and this is a good thing. I am a firm believer that the only thing that works is trying and then trying some more.

3. Added Visibility. By engaging people in discussion you create links, and answers etc. This can only increase the amount of content that google and others pick up on increasing your rankings. When people search for you they will find this activity and it will only result in a more positive opinion of yourself and your business. When outsiders see that you are someone who engages your clients and the general public they will feel more confident in approaching you.

Online Reputation Management has the Answers?

So far in my life I have been involved with many different businesses and industries. They all have one thing in common, they all have dealt with the public and man do they have some weird perspective on things. Most difficulties in business are a direct result of poor or lack of communication and a combination of this mixed with bad information taken as gospel by the public. For example when I was young I was a McDonald’s manager. Every single day I came across people who were misinformed on some level. One lady wanted to know what we made the fries from? I don’t know potatoes maybe? (Stop and think of just how many commercials over the years that McDonald’s has made that highlights the fact that their fries are made from potatoes.)

Anyways, if you are in business one of your greatest challenges  is combating ill informed opinions about what you do. Reputation management is one of the tools you can use to combat this. Considering that the internet has made this problem worse. Anybody today can express a viewpoint no matter how ill informed and be heard. If you are in business and this happens to you the effects could be devastating for your bottom line. Not only are you faced with the fact that customers and competitors can freely express their negative opinions of you they can also propagate rumors and lies.

So what is one to do? Well by utilizing the powers of reputation management in a proactive online strategy you can not only offer the public the correct information they need to know i.e. potatoes make fries. You can eliminate and silence the hordes who can negatively effect your reputation. Remember in today’s age of information overload people turn to google to seek answers to almost every situation. What they find when they do look can cost you a fortune or make you one. You decide!

 

p.s. Its not what the fries are made from that make them bad for you. Its the formula 57 that they fry them in that’s laced with chemicals that does the trick.

Social Media Marketing that Pissed off my Mother.

I stopped by my parents house today and found my mother on her computer. Knowing my interest in social media she just had to bring something to my attention. It was an obvious advertising ploy by a major bread company of all things. The add that had interrupted her internet viewing was by this company and was offering a contest to win some grand prize. The catch to enter the contest was to go on their facebook page and “like” the bread company.
“why the heck would I want all of my friends knowing that I like a certain bread company” was her loud statement. I simply shrugged, but I did think on this. Here is a huge national brand spending big bucks on an internet campaign and they have targeted their message to a member of their audience. The result was that they just angered her.
My thoughts are as follows: Traditional marketing methods while they have there place are not necesarily effective in the social world we live in today. People are seeking answers and solutions for their hectic lives. They are also concerned about their online reputation. If a sixty year old lady wont like a bread company for fear of how this will look to her facebook friends then something is amiss. What the bread company should be doing is offering her value and solutions. More effort is needed on the part of the bread company here. Even my mum knows that it is uncool to be seen as some puppet of an evil corporation. But she would love to be seen as a health crusader offering advice to her sphere of influence on how they could all make their lives better and live healthier.
They should of offered her professional advice on how their new healthier bread will help her lose weight or make her family more healthy,  cool recipes etc. Offering value reduces the obvious sales ploy and treats the customer as an intelligent and important person. Cheap gimmicks and yesterdays marketing can have unexpected negative consequences when employed haphazardly. If your marketing plan is professional, honest and meaningful you can achieve anything. If however you have a lazy and cheap strategy you run the risk of just upsetting your target audience.
