How a Failure to Take the Internet Seriously not only Affects Sales but your Reputation!

He runs a very successful leasing company and was following up on a file he had given one of his top people to handle. He asked her if she approved them for the equipment they needed to lease. Much to his surprise she told him “no, they seemed way to shady I searched the company on google and all I found was an address. No website or anything. What type of business dosn’t have a website?”

The employee had based her decision to approve this businesses application for funding simply on the fact that due to the lack of information she could find on them. She is under the impression that any reputable business would have a strong presence on the internet and information would be readily available.

My uncle was taken back, for the company in question had been in operation since 1963 and he knew that they had an excellent reputation. But this company was an old mortar type business and had done nothing to stay current with the modern world. So now my uncle was in a situation were his employee had denied a financing deal with a terrific potential client and this business couldn’t buy new equipment to operate. All because they had never considered their online presence. After inquiring further he found out that they were not the only ones to deny this company and that they had turned to my uncles company as a last resort. My uncle did reverse the situation but that was only because he knew the business personally.

The point of this story is that in today’s world people use the internet to form their opinions and to make decisions. Not having an online strategy is hurting you in more ways than you can imagine.

How twitter can come in handy for your small business.

ImageSo how can small business owners take advantage of twitter? Here are concrete ways that twitter can help: 

1. Connect with your customers. Twitter allows you to build and maintain authentic relationships with existing and potential customers. 

2. Become an expert. Without preaching, you will build relationships were people will learn to trust you and see you as the local authority regarding your area of expertise. That means referrals and repeat business from existing customers.

3. Maintain customer interest. To often we make a sale and then never see that customer again. Twitter is a great tool that allows you to stay relevant. 

4. Track industry trends and the competition. By following other in your industry you can gain insights into what they are going right/wrong. 

5. Increases your social media content for very little effort. So long as you are consistent you can create a lot of content for a very small amount of work. Link your twitter account to your website blog etc. to keep them fresh and vibrant.

When done right twitter is a fantastic tool that any small business can utilize to increase business and grow market share.

5 GB of storage, and it launches next week, likely on Tuesday at http://drive.google.com. The rise in popularity of dropbox.com the Internets most popular file storage site. Google’s version will be free with additional charges for extra space. The good news is that you start off with 5 GB of storage compared with 2 GB from dropbox. ImageWhy would a real estate agent use social media? The answer is simple, Real estate is about one thing and that is sales. In this game there is no such thing as having to much business. Being a top agent can take years of hard work and dedication and even when you reach that top 5 percent you have to step up your game even more. So how can a real estate agent utilize social media?

1. Build an online presence that saturates your market. Its not enough to just have a website you need a facebook page, twitter and a professional blog that makes you look like a leader in your field. Your main pages must be filled with content that offers value.

2. You must also have positive reviews on all review sites i.e. yellowpages, 411, etc. People want to see that other people have dealt successfully with you before and recommend you when they google you (and they do).

3. After accomplishing the previous 2 steps you must utilize them by bragging to everyone. You can now use your social media presence to close prospective clients.

People want to do business either with successful people or people that they think everyone likes. When you employ a professional social media strategy you can do wonders to your business.

How online reviews affect your current customers

Sure, small businesses must be aware about all online customer reviews, because they are the first impression that a potential new customer gets of your business. But existing customers? They already know you. Surely your online reviews don’t matter to them. Yeah, well, that is what I once thought too, until a friend of mine related a story that taught me otherwise.
I was talking with a friend of mine who owns a local business and he wanted to know how important online reviews are for existing customers, but the reason he was asking was prompted by something that he did when he was acting as a customer to another business.
As he told his story to me, he wanted to buy some stones to be delivered to his home, something he has done a few times. He always uses the same business because he thinks they have a low price, but because he uses them only once a year, he never remembers their phone number. He used to look them up in the Yellow Pages, but this year he searched for their name online to get the phone number.
He isn’t sure what site he landed on. It might have been Yellowpages online or a Google Place Page or something else, but he remembers what he saw: a long list of naegative reviews along with the phone number. He started reading them, and as he did, he said to himself, “Oh yeah, that has happened to me.” And, “Yeah, he has a low price but he always delivers a few days late.” And, “Yeah, I have sometimes had to call him to remind him about my order.”
He then asked himself, “Is the lower price really worth it?” It was one thing when he thought that he had perhaps just caught them on a bad day a few times, but when he gets confirmation that what he has experienced is the norm, and that he very well ought to expect to happen again this time, he asked himself if it was worth it.
And then he decided, “No, it’s not worth it.” And he called someone else.
I had frankly never thought through this kind of scenario, but I have to admit it sounds very common to me. As more and more people use Google as a phone book, and as the ratings and review sites land at the top of the search results, it is easy to see how even existing customers will be swayed by ratings and reviews.
So, add this story to your list of reasons why ratings and reviews are important. Remember that the way you treat your customers matters every single day, and that you must pay attention to what is said online and make improvements to retain your customers as well as to attract new ones

Failure is part of the business cycle- The most important!

Failing in business is the key to success. Its contrary to everything that all the books tell you. They tell you to avoid failure at all costs and to plan, plan, plan. Just keep a positive attitude and work hard and everything will be all right. What they fail to mention is that all successful people are really just masters at dealing with failure. Successful business people fail at most things they do. The most successful sales person in the office is the guy who was told no the most. The company that came up with the best solution had the most ideas that were wrong. Most people fail or avoid business not because they can’t do it, instead they are simply afraid of failure. Positive thinking is irrelevant to most successful people its more of a nature. In order to become a master at anything scientist will tell you that the 10,000 hour rule is what works. You need 10,000 hours of practice to master and skill and this is true of business. The point here is that what do you think happens over those 10,000 hours of practice, well the answer is that you fail, a lot. To see failure for what it truly is “a lesson” is what separates winners from losers. So the next time you embark on a new task please keep in mind that you will fail and that this is a good thing. So long as you embrace your failures and see them for what they are you will be fine. Great salespeople know that they will hear the word “no” and they embrace it and move on, becoming stronger and better all the time. When people try to avoid failures and mistakes they narrow their vision and use statements like “this has to work”. Really, how does anyone know, especially when dealing with the public. The point I am trying to make is that when you start something go into it knowing that failure will dominate whatever you are doing and this is a good thing. I am a firm believer that the only thing that works is trying and then trying some more.

So you have spent a lot of time and energy developing your social media presence. Please do not stop there. If you have done everything right and created content that is important and engages your audience you should receive comments and questions. The more the better! This is the next and most critical stage of your social media strategy.  If done correctly you will start to pull away from the pack. People want to do business with the industry leader and shy away from fly by night operators. By building a solid track record of integrity and professionalism you will be amazed at the dividends this pays out.

2. You will inadvertently be building a community with yourself as a leader. By being professional you build trust and a great reputation. In today’s hectic world someone who responds and does so quickly is a rarity and by doing so you will attract more followers.

3. Added Visibility. By engaging people in discussion you create links, and answers etc. This can only increase the amount of content that google and others pick up on increasing your rankings. When people search for you they will find this activity and it will only result in a more positive opinion of yourself and your business. When outsiders see that you are someone who engages your clients and the general public they will feel more confident in approaching you.
